Changing Your Garden With A Walkway Design

By Gary Hill

A change can make the world of difference in your garden, making it feel brand new. The vast array of ideas for walkway design on the internet and at garden centers can be intimidating and overwhelming though, so plan to plan before you start the project. Consider the realities that will make the project doable.

Doing some online research as to the different styles and methods used would be one of your first steps. Consider your budget, the area to be worked in as well as what the primary use of the pathway is. Your walkway could be as easily solved as putting concrete stepping stones in a line to get from the laundry door to the washing line, or you might want it to be a bit more thought out and attractive, making it a feature of your garden.

Take note of the length of the walkway, which areas should it connect and what does it lead to. A magnificent view with a bench deserves a path to lead visitors to there. Would you be installing a sturdy pathway to safely link the garage to the house, or would you be welcoming people to your front door with your walkway? You may treat each application differently and thereby approach the task differently.

Safety is also a factor that needs to be brought into the design of your walkway. Making the path safe for all users should also be taken into account. You wouldn't want to have one of your family trip over an uneven edge or slip on loose gravel. If you choose to, you could install a handrail of some kind for elderly folk or toddlers that may be a little unsteady.

Keep an element of fun or surprise to the path, especially if you have a big enough area that the walkway can meander through. Try a little bridge over a constructed dry riverbed. Or maybe a little path leading off the main path that ends in a secret fairy garden or play area for the young children in the family.

Plan to visit your closest garden center or supplier of concrete products to get pricing and advice on your project. Find out if they offer a free delivery service or if they will charge for it. Most stores will be happy to offer you advice and assistance with queries throughout the process

Any task such as this can be completely overwhelming if not broken up into smaller manageable jobs. Get help or enlist your friends and family's help, especially with the heavy carrying, because this will let you enjoy the project far more. Each small milestone will be a triumph and make the end seem closer. Keep in mind that you are improving your yard and adding value to your home with the addition of the walkway.

After all is said and done, take the time to wander along your path, no matter how long or short it is. Enjoy the feeling of satisfaction that sweeps over you while you watch your family enjoy the fruits of your labours.
